All those who know what Ramadan is know how difficult it can be for a non Muslim, especially with no food or water for the whole day. So to all those who don't know, or those who are thinking of coming to Palestine here are a few pointers to learn.
- Ramadan is a Muslim moon month, one of 12 different months. And it is called the immigrant year for the Muslims based on Mohammed the profit immigration from "Mecca" to "AL Medina" in what is now known as Saudi Arabia. In this year there are 354 days, were the month is either 29 or 30 days.
- Ramadan is the ninth month of the year and it's the month of fasting in Islam in which all Muslims around the world fast from Dawn till Dusk meaning no food, water, smoking even basically anything than enters your stomach.
- Those who are excused from fasting according to the Islamic religion are pregnant women, sick people, young children, people traveling over 80K, and women during having their ministerial period.
- In Palestine it's considered rude and inappropriate to eat or drink in the street, so lately the Palestinian police arrests those who do defy that for a day.
- In almost every city though you can find some restaurants or cafes that open discreetly - the ones not located on the main streets- so you can still eat, drink, or smoke there without any problems.
- As to alcohol shopping, all the shops of alcohol in the West Bank close during the month, except for a few that remain working during the night in Bethlehem and Beit Jala due to the fact they most of their residents are christian.
- When breaking fast "Iftar" in Arabic, right after the Imam of each area who is following the leading Imam of Jerusalem Al-Aqsa mosque says "Allah Akbar" immediately after the Dusk people can start eating. Which traditionally starts with two dates then some soup following that with the main meal, and ending with some dessert. Typically Palestinian ones that are sold and made only during this month which are called "Qatayef".
Hope you all like these ,these are only a few things you know now about Ramadan in Palestine... keep reading tomorrow I am posting even more exciting things about Ramadan in Palestine...
